I asked an AI for video ideas, and they were actually good
I didn't expect this to work so well. • Includes text generated by OpenAI's GPT-3 at my request: openai.com • Art by Chris Quay: www.chrisquay.com/ • Got an idea for a video? www.tomscott.com/contact/
Filmed safely: www.tomscott.com/safe/
OpenAI had no control or sign-off on this video, although I agreed to abide by their ethical guidelines and social media policy.
Thanks to Eddie the corgi's owner for introducing me to the folks at OpenAI: eddie_corg

I should clarify that by "out of ideas", I mean that I've only got enough to last me until the end of March, or maybe the middle of April if lockdown eases. The way I work, that's close enough that I start to get worried.

The idea of a subseries where you either do the ai ideas, or document your attempts and research into the ai ideas, could be fun.

The British road that's also a boat- sounds like a ferry that's part of the motorway system. We have a few in the US and Canada.

Tom, Nostalgia for a thing that never existed is what Vaporwave is.

Anemoia is almost a good enough word for "nostalgia for a thing that never existed" because if it has never existed, then one can certainly have nostalgia for that thing they never experienced.
You know where the curve flattens. Its when the AI become sentient.
"The beach where you can hear the sea" is too generic for its own video, but you could probably make a video about the ocean currents that can carry sound waves halfway around the world
It's weird, maybe one day we just have to press a button and the AI generates a thousand more poems by Keats or Rilke, Shakespeare or Sophocles. Not sure how I feel about that.
"Kirby's Dream" Kirby's Dream Land. POYYYOOOO9OOOOOOOO
Including this title ;)
i wanna see the death lottery screw the others
"The white cube at the end of the world" sounds like a Lovecraft story I would read
bruuuuuh
5:08 there is a city that disappeared
"Jeremy Clarkson's Lottery of Death" The new series of Millionaire sounds like a bit of a change from established formula, but I'm here for it.
Isn’t a road that is also a boat called a ferry?
4:23 now there are like 17 results at this point in time
I for one am fully on the team "A cliff that refuses to be a cliff"...
cant wait for loftshire to disappear so we cal all point fingers at tom
"impossible"
salty wiganer here. wigan's in the north west, mate.
Kirby’s Dreamland looks different than i remember...
I WANT TO KNOW ABOUT THE WHITE CUBE AT THE END OF THE WORLD.
Of course "The Long Forgotten History of the British Moon Landings" isn't possible. But that is because it's not that they're forgotten, we just don't talk about them; to avoid upsetting the Yanks who arrived a decade later than us and only visited a few times. Greetings from Ipswich-in-Crater, The Moon. How is life on Earth these days?
Gaelic has the word you need! 'Cianalas'- a Scottish Gaelic word that means nostalgia for something that doesn't really exist outside your own imagination/memories...
2:20 Well actually, I'm not sure about in britain, but I know a major highway in Alaska actually has part of it's run only passable by ferry, as in the path that route takes goes right over the ferry, so that is almost a valid title IMO
The feeling of Nostalgia about something that didn't exist is something I know from listening to Synthwave.
1:38 Why does that thousand sound like it's in more of an Irish accent than usual? I think it's Irish, at least - if it isn't, it is some kind of accent from Britain.
Hahahahahaha I love "The beach where you can hear the sea." If nothing else, this AI could produce top tier shitposting.
surely a landslide is a cliff refusing to be a cliff
The Failed Bomb Plot Pidgeon was the result of a military coo...
Would like a video about those post railways!
These are all doctor who episode ideas
Someone should make an AI to realize patterns in text and see if it’s written by an AI
At least the AI thinks you just want to make the world a better place
Kirby’s Dream Land!
2:20 I can actually imagine a boat with a road on it designed to be "portable bridge" for low infrastructure places with water streams.
Wigan Pier is also in Wigan on the Leeds-Liverpool Canal. I never knew about the Westmidlands wigan pier project though so thankyou.
Hey, if your reading this Tom, I have a video idea. You could do another video like the jingle bell one, asking for childhood rhymes, and go through them all. I would find that interesting.
5:05 I just want to appreciate this specific art. It’s my favorite out of the ones here.
That is incredible, but you went with the communist utopia instead of the floating mountain??
I mean, you could always use those fictional things as videos for April Fool's Day.
You speak too fast. Speak slow and get people to actually see all your videos completely.
The real question is, in which of these hypothetical worlds do Marcel & Judith Kebakko live?
Let's double-layer this Turing test: can a human come up with Tom Scott video titles that sound like they were created by a (relatively advanced, like GPT-3) AI? Here's my attempt: "I Asked 45,268 People to Steal My Identity" "The Polish City That's Slowly Floating Away" "I Am Not a Toaster" "Isaac Newton's Secret Ant Farm" "Why I Can't Upload this Video" "Don't Shoot a Mountain with a BB Gun" "The Assassination of Jerry the Mailman: Debunked" Add your own!
"Nostalgia for a thing that never existed" That would be Historicism. And there are plenty of books and lectures about that very specific way of messing up your entire world view.
I kinda wish I could get an AI to write some scripts for me. I'm terrible at getting scripts out, and honestly think it would be humorously on theme for my channel...
My great great grandad was captain of the RRS discovery
6:19 KIRBY KIRBY KIRBY THAT'S THE NAME YOU SHOULD KNOW
2:44 Tom, please, DON'T give Clarkson, Hammond and May these ideas, they might take them too seriously
Kirby's Dream sounds like a good nintendo title- oh wait, Kirby's Dreamland, right.
Yikes that AI is scary good at writing.
you should make a new Matt and Tom video
You've got plenty of April's fool videos though
@7:08 Did Tom *finally* have good luck with traffic passing during filming??

I really want to believe it
Sounds like the Roald Dahl story: The Great Automatic Gammatisator.
anemoia means nostalgia for a thing you haven't/cannot experience
'The british road that is also a boat' ... sir, that is an aircraft carrier.
I think ur Chanel is about usless, interessting and nerdy stuff just "ok now i know this But... What I have to Do with this Informationen."
anemoia - longing for or nostalgia for a place you have never been.
In Welsh the word you need for that feeling of nostalgia is "Hiraeth"
CONTAINMENT PROCEDURE
Dont wanna be ruff but you seem to get kinda old
British road that is also a boat -- I mean, drive-on ferries (and, arguably, aircraft carriers). Maybe not as nonsensical as it seems.
Omg, it's adorable that you asked the AI using "please" at the start of your request. You are definitely one of the few people who are going to survive the techno-apocalypse because you showed the machines respect from the start. EDIT: and then this took a scary and sinister turn when you mentioned the possibility of AI generating customer reviews etc...
Don't know about AI, but PLclip's algorithm decided I might be interested in a video from someone called Tom Scott. A couple weeks later, and I've lost count how many videos I've now watched from his channel.
ai like that combined with the advancements in deepfake technology will make for an interesting future where nothing is real and no one can be trusted.
Cliffs that have shore to the oceans are actually refusing to be cliffs they keep collapsing constantly
i wonder what'll happen if you'd give the bible to this AI and make it continue to write
5:25 Mandela effect
"The White Cube at the End of the World" omg I want to watch it! ...Or read it! ...Or listen to it! ...Or play it! Not sure what it may be so I'm not sure what verb I should put there, but I surely want to.
When cars pass, bit sounds like someone entering a nether portal
I very well might start making a youtube channel comprised solely of Tom Scott-esque videos in which all the information presented is completely made up. Is that immoral, or funny?
cool
Just subscribed
i would love to see Tom monologues an anime-uesqe video about the white cube at the end of the world omg
Tom Scott / Scarfolk Council crossover when!?
*the cliff that refuses to be a cliff*
*T’noight on Jeremy Clarkson’s Lottery of Death*
That script sounded so good you could just upload that and I'd believe you
Only a Brit would ask an AI to do something using please
Wait so does it take actual stuff from the web and style a title in a Tom Scott kinda way
So whatever *did* happen to be the video name it gave you hadn't put out at the time. Has it been since?

The video has been uploaded, it's the one titled "Why No-One Will Save Covehithe, The Village That Will Soon Crumble Into The Sea", if you haven't found it yet
I would love some of those not real stories! You should make a second channel devoted to it.
Is it just me or does "rhe white cube at the end of the world" make anyone else think of the "Ice cube project"... I think that is what it is called... I think they were trying to find out more about Neutrinos? Likely not a video option. But really interesting and worth reading into in my opinion
The beach where you can hear the sea XD
Lofthouse is about 30 minutes away from a village which was fully submerged following the building of Thruscross Reservoir, so the AI got so very close to being right
Jeremy Clarkson's lottery of death is something I want to see (also, Clarkson must be a great source of material for AIs). And I'd love to read the script for British Moon landings as well, because why Britain should stop at Earth when could conquer the universe?
i feel like nostalgia for something you’ve never experienced is just... a wish??
There actually is a word for nostalgia for something that’s never existed! It’s anemoia
anything worth doing once is worth doing twice
I will give up my left lung to watch Jeremy Clarkson’s Lottery of Death
"The Dream of a Russian Utopia in East Yorkshire" Had be wheezing, lmao-
That was fun
Those untrue ones are almost all SCP ideas...
I need a fictional Tom Scott universe channel.
The cliff that refuses to be a cliff Huh I swear you just uploaded that video
Animated Tom Scott looks like Grian
I want to see the cliff that refuses to be a cliff.
2:45
I’m from Aberfan, good shout not doing that one, very depressing

Also it’s funny you said you don’t think there’s a word for nostalgia for something that doesn’t exist, but actually in welsh there’s this word, ‘hiraeth’, which doesn’t translate, but sort of means a longing to go back to either wales, or a place/time that doesn’t exist!
“The cliff that refuses to be a cliff” would be a great video explaining a geological terminology error made in 1963 that has never been corrected
the traffic on that road has perfect timing
Dude I love dungeon So stories and this reminds me of that.
