The WRC is the FIA World Rally Championship, a tough motorsport using rally cars on real roads around the world. Watch the best rally drivers battle on gravel and asphalt roads with mud, rain, dust, ice and heat! Watch high speed action as the rally drivers power slide and drift round narrow corners, go flat out over a big jump or through a watersplash, handbrake turn round a hairpin, survive a big moment, or have a massive crash! Rally requires maximum attack and careful tactics to become world rally champion.
Each rally has timed sections called special stages, on closed roads. Drivers complete these stages as quickly as possible. A co-driver reads pace notes that explain the hazards ahead. Rally drivers use the same rally car to travel to each stage on public roads, following normal traffic regulations. The crew which completes all the stages in the shortest time is the rally winner. Championship points are won using the same scoring system as Formula 1. The championship is administered by Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), motorsport's world governing body.
Over 30 countries have hosted WRC rallies. Rally Monte Carlo, Rally Argentina, Rally Finland, Rally Portugal, Tour de Corse on Corsica, France, Rally Sardegna on Sardinia, Italy, Safari Rally in Kenya, Acropolis Rally in Greece, Rally New Zealand, Rally Australia, Rally Japan, Rally GB, Rally Catalunya, Rallye Deutschland, Rally Mexico and many more.
Some of the world's greatest drivers have won the FIA World Rally Championship for Drivers, like Colin McRae, Carlos Sainz, Walter Röhrl, Stig Blomqvist, Petter Solberg, Ott Tänak. The list of world rally champions includes many Finnish rally drivers like Juha Kankkunen, Tommi Mäkinen, Ari Vatanen, Marcus Grönholm, Hannu Mikkola. French drivers have had success with Sébastien Ogier, and 9 times world champion Sébastien Loeb. Famous drivers from other motorsports have come to try rally driving like Ken Block from Rallycross, and Robert Kubica and Kimi Räikkönen from F1.
Car companies compete for the prestigious FIA World Rally Championship for Manufacturers awarded to the most successful WRC constructor. Winners include Citroen, Hyundai, Volkswagen and Peugeot. Ford have had success with the Ford Escort, Ford Focus and Ford Fiesta when the M-Sport team won in 2017.
The 1980's featured the iconic Group B rally cars like the Lancia 037 and Delta S4, Peugeot 205 T16, MG Metro 6R4, Ford RS200 and Audi Quattro.
Japan dominated the 1990s with the Mitsubishi Lancer, Subaru Impreza, and Toyota Celica and Toyota Corolla. Toyota returned to the WRC in 2017 with the Toyota Yaris WRC, winning in 2018. The 2019 championship was won by Hyundai with the Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC. Find out about the latest winners and champions at www.wrc.com

What pathetic coverage. 1.50 mins for a full days rally is not good enough. Reporter's poor technique of dropping his voice at the end of sentences renders him inaudible. You need to do better than this if you want more subscribers!!!! JB

@LightningB they can still see a bit of road and all of the surroundings. They read the pace notes and feel the movement of the car. I’m sure you too can tell when a car is moving left or right and can gauge the speed of a vehicle by the undulations in the road. They’re professionals!

Would be great if you can show the top 8 drivers, as just the top 5 looks very empty, like WRC is on its last legs. Id rather see Ford in 26th place than not at all.

I would say that Toyota NEED to drop Katsuta to move on because he is just not getting results

  • Ondra Spendlik

    Ondra Spendlik

    Miesiąc temu

@Milán Bogár Oh, I didn't know that. So Katsuta is basically a guy who Toyota pushed into the team to drive in a WRC1 car with a factory support. Well, he still serves a purpose there. He's gaining experience (don't forget Ogier wants to retire, Katsuta is one of Toyota's options for the third car next year), and he's also there to help with putting pressure on Hyundai and stealing their points. With Tanak out of Monte Carlo, Hyundai only has two cars now. If one of them gets into trouble, he may get ahead and that would mean less points for Hyundai. I think that's one of the reasons they're running 4 cars.

  • Milán Bogár

    Milán Bogár

    Miesiąc temu

@Ondra Spendlik Yes, exactly. Quote from the rulebook: "For any one Manufacturer, a maximum of three (3) nominated drivers may be eligible to score points of which only the 2 best placed (see Art. 5.2.6) will score points according to their relative position."

  • Ondra Spendlik

    Ondra Spendlik

    Miesiąc temu

@Milán Bogár Why is he not eligible for points? Is there a rule that only 3 chosen cars can try to fight for the manufacturer's points?

  • Milán Bogár

    Milán Bogár

    Miesiąc temu

@Ondra Spendlik Katsuta is not eligible for manufacturer points even if the other 3 Toyotas would retire. As you said he is Toyota's Japanese driver so there is zero chance that he would be dropped.

  • Ondra Spendlik

    Ondra Spendlik

    Miesiąc temu

Well, he's in the fourth car. Only the two best are scoring manufacturer's points. He's there to pick up at least something in case two Toyotas hit trouble. Last season, they narrowly lost to Hyundai, so every point can make a difference. Katsuta is great for that role, he knows he doesn't have the pace for top 3 and he probably doesn't cost Toyota as much as the other 3 drivers. Also, it may be Toyota trying to push Japanese drivers into the team (just like Honda in F1).

  • Eni

    Eni

    Miesiąc temu

@Buddy14 Skoda is basically VW yes. But Mercedes is also Premium brand competing in Motor Sports. And Audi wouldnt fit into F1 I think :). Alpine had one show car at the Monte I think ? But due to pandemic I doubt that many brands will invest millions in developing a WRC car the next years. Maybe with the new Hybrid technology in WRC 2022 it will become more interesting for some manufacturers to polish their "green" image. Group B ? WRC is like a modern Group B. Super expensive cars which are incredible fast and have almost nothing to do with the road versions beside lights and doors lol ? It would be less attractive to manufacturers too if they couldnt promote their road versions because they need some unrecognizable high-spec rally machines. Like almost all sports its now more about money than passion...

  • Ondra Spendlik

    Ondra Spendlik

    Miesiąc temu

@Buddy14 I think he just wants a new Group B. More variety in the cars, less rules to allow for more power, etc. I mean, it would be possible with all the safety improvements, but do we really need rally cars to get faster than they are now? They're fast enough already, much faster than the original Group B. We don't want cars that are too fast for the drivers. Besides, manufacturers are not interested now, imagine if the cars got even faster and more expensive to build, we'd be happy if there were 2 teams. New Group B is just not the direction that brands want to take. I'm personally hoping for the return of Peugeot, they're getting more involved with sports cars, and being part of Stellantis now, they likely can afford investments. We'll see if they'll just settle for endurance racing or if they come back to rallying. I'd personally love a new category for almost stock cars. The cars would have all the safety features of a WRC car, but not much other modification (just a massive weight reduction in form of removing non essential parts). There would be maximum power limit (AWD cars would have less power than 2WD cars). That could motivate manufacturers to build road cars with rallying in mind and try to go rallying for less money than in the WRC. It would also effectively promote their cars, just like rallying always did. Make any regular person in their road car feel like they're driving the rally car. You don't get to feel that in your normal Yaris or i20, not even the Yaris GR or the i20 N.
