"L.Torvalds was right about Intel being cocky" First article: "F*** you NVidia"
I've got old DDR3 RAM & it works perfectly fine without crashing. I imagine DDR4 is more reliable than DDR3, so the question should be. How often do errors happen anyways?
"Linus Torvalds may not have been polite about it, but he was definitely right" should go on Torvalds' tombstone. That is the essence of his being.
10 minutes to know that you did not do a STABILITY TEST!
Are you running your ecc in quad channel? If not, no point.
The "COSMIC RAYS" moment should have used Kirby Dots (AKA Kirby Krackle). But then, I *am* an old (literally) Marvel nerd.
I'm gonna trying ecc. Fusion 360 and Inventor crashes at daily base. Could it be so instability in software? Or is it memory instability? Any advising or suggestions about it?
Cosmic rays are usually the reason. They are unstoppable and unpredictable and pack a ton of energy.
8:00 - me trying to run something be like
Just buy Sennheiser HD 600. Thank me later.
ECC memory should have been implemented on personal computers by the late 1980s. It would have made microcomputing a couple of orders of magnitude more reliable, but only slightly more expensive.
ECC is just for stability and reliability I love it. I have a Xeon workstation with ECC and wouldn't want it any other way. It is good to know that AMD allows it... it is great to know actually :)
ECC "can" be about 2% slower. Also given you get about 1 correction every 14 to 40 hours per gigabit of dram the odds of it happening in that crucial spot that causes a system crash or anything else important is slim to none. I'm not saying it isn't important just that for most people it probably isn't going to be noticeable
8:45 "Thanks Linnus!" Wait that's how you pronounce your name? I always read it like Lai-nus.
Praise AMD
remember when ECC was cheaper than reg ram? ahh, the past times when buying computer components wasnt the price of a car.. those were the days
lol that has to be one weird sentence. Linus is was right about Linus being right. Ok so does that meen the Dude talks like the Rock? oh right one is the Linux guy the other is..ok so kind of the Linux guy. hmm Linus BreaksStuff vs Linus ProgramsStuff. their we go.
THANKS LINUS!!!! adjusting accordingly.
YES cosmic rays are bad - both for living biology & other electrically driven processes like computing.
Did anyone else see the reflection in the 2080?
8:55 are those rocks from Luke's pc?
yo, LTT talking about their father
1:48 [CC] parody data (not auto-generated) I mean. You can kind of bend the meaning of parody to make this work. But you probably meant parity.
Clickbait: titling your video after a famous person who you anecdote in the title
I would purchase ECC memory for my gaming rig if it could reach speeds of 3600mhz to 4000
In the beginning, ECC was standard.
Too bad they oc'd the cpu so it is blowing the memory to Swiss cheese anyway.
Linus propaganda
I dont appreciate that you are trashing richard stallman and the entire gnu community, including me by attributing all our work to linus who only made the kernel. Please call it what it is, Gnu/linux
The problem of ecc is the price. I have a Intel Server and a amd gaming rig. The memory of the server is double the price of the memory of my gaming rig.
Yes.. Torvalds was making a point about re-inventing the wheel in a shape of a rectangle just for the monetization.. We see this trend everywhere... people fall short, so they dig a hole for you to climb out of... of course they have the ladder..for a modest "fee". This is gain trough prohibiting the human development. Essentially anti-human behavior.

One could argue that facing an obstacle make us engage more.. but thats just throwing canes between the spokes so you can sell a bandage.
Two of my three fav. Famous Linuses. Good video!

I’ve been building machines with RAID 0+1 and ECC since 2002. Simply because I ran my CPU to render 3D art
"Linus was right" and "RMS was right" are slowly becoming household names/phrases.
When I was freelancing doing videos the render crashed so many times because the memory overheating (had to put an extra cooler for memory itself). Then I moved to the new platform with tons of ECC memory... and stoped making videos at all! :(
wait so facebook doesn't have gamers backs?
ECC.. well, it's more expensive and doesnt only protects so much against failure. it *can* still happen, although at a much reduced rate. for gaming rigs it doesnt really pay. still, one should be able to use it, if he needs it. there's no use to have to go to workstation/server platforms.
i heard hamming code saved space tech all the time , a little mistake and things can be destroyed , get lost in space or if tripulated by people they could have died. Im learning about it in the uni and keep failing the examns of it all the time.
Warning! I installed one of these modules (followed Linus's link) into my Asrock x570 steel legend (yes it has explicit support), and... it kind of worked. It was giving correctable and eventually uncorrectable errors (so yes, ECC was in fact working) until I bumped the voltage to 1.3v. It survived all torture tests after that at the default speed (3200mhz). Any attempt to increase the frequency resulted in a crash, so it operates right at the edge of tolerance. But, all was not well. The only problem that I'm having with this module installed is that it frequently refuses to reboot. Booting, and shutting down works fine, but rebooting often fails. I tried lowering the freqs to 2666, and still the problem persists. Bad module? I just asked newegg for a return-refund. :(
1:03 Do they finally have a Linux version?
I thought this was going to be about NVidia, which generated the birdie that illustrated the video. (Linus Torvolds was right about that, too!)
i need that cpu pillow
Well done 👍
this is outrageous! As a gamer I have to eat doritos now? I like potato chips, I don't want to switch
So I guess ECC will come with RGB soon
I thought that was sam hyde in the thumbnail lmao
Intel cut ECC support for consumer i3 and Pentium Gold since the 10th gen. They want me buying the Xeon W-1250, but I need a lower power CPU and the fun fact: The W-12xx are hard to get. So how can I send my money to Intel if they don't want it?
Linus Torvalds "Charming", ROFL. I'm a Linux nerd and I think Linus Torvalds can be a bit blunt sometimes to put it lightly. Linus Torvalds went with the Monolithic kernel for Linux to prove a point. That's how "Charming" he is.
I got ECC RAM in my work computer and dual core xeon. I love my work computer! I believe my work machine is RDIMM
So give it about 6 months before AMD's ECC can out perform non-ECC got it
i can almost hear the word glasswire when he says "sponsor"
Some day soon (I hope) Linus, you'll come over from the dark side and focus more on the OS that your namesake has built for you :-D
I've had memory crashes that could've been avoided with ECC lol
hey linus ecc is actualy cheaper and a lot in ddr3 on aliexpress if you can bare the 1month delivery of course, and memory crashes come on... a ddr4 memory crash for any of us? a pc crash caused by ddr4 memory is equaly likely than a fridge falling from the sky at your car at 1.december 2035, ecc is great for editors of big projects or for servers but for gamers? nah dont bather buying it it wont make a difference
My next system is gonna be any decently priced CPU+Mobo that supports ECC. No matter the cost... well, hopefully at not too much extra cost.
If I want to overclock my memory I just cut on XMP and call it a day.
3:06. Its me 😮...

thanks man
Love the selfie reflection in the 2080 super :D
09:00 but do they work on Linux?
This is why I don’t watch Linus much anymore, it feels like he just bashes on Intel in most of his videos. Now I understand AMD makes good products but, it get annoying hearing Intel succ AMD goog every vid
5:37 That reflection is good
nvidia fucked with everybody.hail to amd!
1:48 "Parody data" in CC, lol
"Parody data", what? Who does these subtitles, and how do you fix them?
The furry furtive oven peroperatively number because wasp incidentally crash after a absorbing hub. old, momentous napkin
Beard, beenie and a hoodie, are you a drug addict, linus?
Don't buy a car that has a drive computer without ecc.
If you're hosting a game like ark even in a non-dedicated session this can reduce crashes.
I'm running my R5 3600 with 64GB of micron single rank ecc ram. One more advantage to the stability is, that it runs 3200Mt/s at 1.2V and stays perfectly cool without the need for heat spreaders. The standard voltage also has the advantage, that it runs the 3200Mt/s stock without having to use D.O.C.P. . And it might be more gentle to the cpu's memory controller.
Wait Wait Wait hol' up. is that a crunchyroll hat?
128gb of ram, pffff i am working on a server right now, i want to adress, quite cheap one still, that has also 128gb of ram, but still 20 slots empty, and it could also take another cpu too...
ECC is not worth the price. Especially in Workstations. I'm managing 20 CAD stations in my workplace I switched out from ECC to regular PC memory and none of my users notice a difference in performance or crashes. And my tracking proves this out over the past 8 years. Save the money and put it to something else (another stick of ram maybe?) or get a thumbs up from your boss for saving a few hundred bucks on the new workstations you purchased under budget.
Linus Torvalds video in Linus Tech Tips channel lmao
8:36 "But if you want the utmost instability..." haha!
Thanks, Linus! And Linus Torvald! I didn't even know about ECC b4!
1:47 "parody data" ?!? Eeee... What? :) I think that might be "parity data". "Parody" is current overall supply situation...
Anyone who has edited IPB h264 4k or any other highly compressed codec in premiere knows the quality of life that ECC brings.
mb
I was watching this whole video thinking "Who cares?"
of fucking course it was pannenkoek who discovered it...
Why ECC ram have better performance and faster than the one without ECC?
The fact that there is no distinction between executable code and data means that your program could jump at the wrong address and crash the system by jumping just about anywhere.
Inverted bits are the worst. Ask Bruce Jenner.
#FUNVIDIA !!!
50 bucks more? nooooooooooooooooope waste of money.
Linus Torvalds is one of my tech heroes.
Linus is right that Linus was right.
me running tREFI at 65535 and tRFC at 220 ecc who?
On average pc this kind of errors happen once a three years man.
Since i use Linux this ecc memory compatibility will be useful for compiling code without ending up with a failed binary executable
vaino
Miesiąc temu
will it really... i mean it probably would like twice in your life but i think you've got some bigger problems if all your code is resulting in a failed executable lol
Well everyone is into building their own server now adays, its only logical to make ecc available to every device.
I run a minecraft server off my computer. Wishing for better single thread cpu, Or Minecraft becoming multi thread. I allocate about 10 of my 16 gb of ram(not a big server). If my ram is not working properly, I find out really quickly.
The chemical step-son hemodynamically trace because bankbook technologically talk onto a acid children. few fierce, literate thomas
Do memory errors ever happen if the stick is not defective?
I thought Linus was talking about himself.
“Utmost instability, thanks AMD” wow.... slip of the tongue there? Must have been lost in the post...
